Laced, laceless, or loafer
A laced official shoe gives the sharpest, most formal look and is the safest choice for a suit or an interview. A laceless (slip-on) official keeps the same formal silhouette but skips the daily hassle of tying laces — a genuinely practical upgrade for a busy morning. A moccasin or loafer sits at the more relaxed end of formal, smart enough for the office but comfortable enough to wear with tailored trousers on a lower-key day too.
Black or brown
Black is the safer, more formal default — it goes with any suit colour and reads correctly at almost any formal occasion. Brown (or coffee-toned) shoes pair better with lighter-coloured suits and read slightly less formal, which suits a smart-casual office environment better than a strictly corporate one. If you're only buying one pair, black is the more versatile choice.
